Why Is The Climate Changing?

According to a study, the average global temperature by 2100 is expected to be 2.5°F to 10.4°F higher than what it was in 1990. Scientists state that the levels of warming that we experience. Essentially depend upon the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) we emit into the environment.

Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and water vapor trap heat close to the surface of the earth in order to keep the temperature stable. This is a natural phenomenon, called the greenhouse effect.

However, after the industrial revolution, there was a significant increase in the average amount of GHGs. Being released into the atmosphere, leading to a more severe greenhouse effect and an imbalance in the energy levels of the planet. This is the major reason behind the warming of the earth’s surface, its oceans and its entire atmosphere.

Climate Change and New York

Data shows that in a single year, fossil fuel combustion in the New York State releases more than 14 tons of GHGs per resident into the atmosphere.

With the aim to reduce its carbon footprint; GHG emissions, avoid doing irreversible damage to the planet’s environment and adapt to the changing climate, the local authorities of New York State launched a program called the New York Climate Smart Communities.

Any city, town or county can become a member of the Climate Smart Communities. All they have to do is adhere to the principles of the CSC pledge, which requires them to do the following:

  • Increase the use of renewable energy,
  • Practice solid-waste management,
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
  • Prepare for climate change,
  • Support green innovation,
  • Create public awareness, and
  • Engage in the climate action process.

Communities should take the initiative and become part of the Climate Smart Communities. As it will help them do the following:
